One Friday evening, with no excuse beyond wanting a break as a family in the middle of summer, Staycation sent us to Cabot Bordeaux, in Le Pian-Médoc, about twenty kilometres from the city centre. A 4-star golf resort we probably wouldn’t have picked ourselves, tucked between vineyards and greens, but it turned into a real escape from the buzz of central Bordeaux.
What is Cabot Bordeaux?
Cabot Bordeaux is a 4-star MGallery hotel, part of the Accor group, set within a resort that spans two 18-hole golf courses, Châteaux and Vignes. The first, a former host of the French Open, was designed by American Bill Coore and Canadian Rod Whitman; the second was designed solo by Whitman two years later. Together, the two courses earned the resort the title of Best Golf Resort in France 2025 at the World Golf Awards.

The hotel has 79 rooms, including 6 suites, ranging from 25 to 51 square metres, all facing either the course or the Médoc countryside, furnished with pieces made by local craftspeople. This is less a city boutique hotel than a refined country estate; the surrounding vineyards and châteaux set the tone.
Our family stay

Which room did we get?
We were upgraded to a ground-floor room with a terrace. It’s not particularly spacious for three once you add the extra bed, but we ended up spending very little time in it. The night was remarkably quiet, which we appreciated.
What makes the difference
The staff are attentive and warm, at reception, in the restaurant, and at the spa. Getting a late check-out without any fuss changed the shape of the whole stay: instead of leaving first thing, we could work through breakfast, the heated indoor pool and the sensory shower before handing back the keys, turning one night into a real break. Our daughter and I spent a good chunk of that time in the sensory shower, switching between birdsong and tropical storm settings. One of the best memories from the trip.
On the plus side…

What about dinner?
We had dinner at Le Club Restaurant, the resort’s main dining room, its floor-to-ceiling windows facing the Châteaux course. The menu champions Southwest French produce, and the cellar holds more than 130 references, including 36 grands crus from partner châteaux in the Médoc. The vegetarian meal we ordered was genuinely thought through, real dishes rather than a fallback salad, which isn’t always the case at hotel restaurants built around a meat-heavy regional cuisine. The downside, and it’s a real one: the wait between courses dragged on far longer than a Friday night at a restaurant of this calibre should excuse, especially since the room was far from full.
What about breakfast?
The morning buffet, served in the same room, made up for the evening before. Good variety, quality ingredients, smooth service despite the Saturday morning crowd. A pleasant surprise.
Will we be back?
For the spa, without question. It gave us a proper pause. The pool is warm and sun-drenched, and we appreciated having a hammam, the sensory shower and a tea room on hand. Worth noting too: how quiet our night was, looking out over the course.
Activities

At the hotel
The Spa by Cinq Mondes is the resort’s real wellness backbone: a heated indoor pool, hammam, a fitness room open 24/7 for guests, a sensory shower, a tea room and duo cabins for treatments as a pair. Hotel guests get priority access during opening hours, with the hammam and sensory shower running from 10am to 8pm, and the pool from 9am to 8pm.
On the golf side, both the Châteaux and Vignes courses stay open to green-fee visitors, no room booking required. The resort bar, overlooking the Châteaux course, pours a signature Green Mojito, a decent excuse to stretch the evening without getting back in the car.
Nearby
Cabot Bordeaux sits right in the Médoc, surrounded by châteaux such as Phélan Ségur, Pichon Baron and Léoville Poyferré, several of which run tastings and tours. Bordeaux’s historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is about twenty minutes away by car, as is the airport.

MGallery Cabot Bordeaux: FAQ

Is Cabot Bordeaux part of Sofitel?
No. Despite the common mix-up, the property is a 4-star MGallery hotel, a separate Accor brand from Sofitel.
Does the restaurant offer vegetarian options?
Yes. Le Club Restaurant’s menu, built around Southwest French cuisine, includes properly composed vegetarian dishes rather than a single fallback option.
Can you use the spa without golfing or staying at the hotel?
Yes, on a half-day basis from 10am to 7pm, with access to the heated indoor pool, hammam, fitness room, sensory shower and tea room.
How far is it from Bordeaux and its airport?
The resort is in Le Pian-Médoc, about 20km northwest of Bordeaux and its airport, roughly a twenty-minute drive.
What is Staycation and how does it work?
Staycation is a French app offering bed-and-breakfast deals at characterful hotels, at reduced rates and in limited quantities. New offers go live every Wednesday at 9am, and bookings can be made up to 45 days ahead or last minute.
Is Cabot Bordeaux a good fit for a family trip with a preteen?
The resort leans more toward an adult-focused golf and wellness experience, but the pool and grounds give a preteen room to roam without boxing her into a dedicated kids’ area.
